Suck It Dwight!

I would like to take this opportunity to give a shout out of thanks for Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov.  After 18 months of getting hand cranked by Dwight Howard, Proky finally desided he'd rather just get laid by Joe Johnson.  The New Jersey Nets sent a massive amount of garbage to Atlanta yesterday afternoon in exchange for Joe Johnson (All Star, enormous contract, vastly overpaid).  How does this affect Dwight Howard, you ask? Basically the move is designed as a play to keep Derron Williams in Brooklyn.  Problem for Howard is that they are essentially out of cap flexibility and won't be taking on his max deal this season or next year in free agency.

So where does this leave Baby Boy Dwight?  Dude better expand that list of "one team" he's willing to play for because he very well might not be playing for anyone then.

ESPN is reporting that there is still a potential deal being discussed by the Nets and Magic (read as: the Nets are floating some bullshit out there to see if Orlando is dumb enough to eat it) that centers around the Nets doing a sign and trade of Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries and throwing in MarShon Brooks for Dwight Howard.  I would like to think that the Magic cannot be stupid enough to make such a deal because they will literally be getting back about $0.45 on the dollar in actual basketball value and losing the face of their franchise in the process.  I also have to think that the new Magic regime is going to have a bit of a "fuck you" attitude towards Dwight Howard at this point.  Trade him anywhere you want (Charlotte would be AMAZING) and let him become a free agent and sign somewhere next season.  It won't be with New Jersey and the places with available cap room are all garbage.

In semi-related news...  keep an eye on new Hawks GM Danny "the riverboat gambler" Ferry, who has shipped both Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams out of town and is seriously shopping Josh Smith as well (see -> Gasol, Lakers).  The only guy we will recognize on their roster at the start of the season is going to be Al Horford.

Be on the lookout for a more comprehensive update of all the day's comings and goings this afternoon.

  1. I found this trade really funny. Are the Nets going to be that much better with JJ? It hurts the cap space. To me it makes no sense.

The Magic will end up winning in this scenario, my money is still on Houston. Williams goes to Dallas for sure!

  2. I agree 100% on the Joe Johnson move. I don't understand how a faux "all star" who cripples your cap room is supposed to entice Derron Williams to stay. Don't think this move does that at all. It's a desperation hail mary play driven by the front office's belief that they can't get the Dwight Howard deal done and they were staring down the barrel at best guy on the roster being Gerald Wallace (See Charlotte, 2008).

Think you could be right about Houston but I think with the most recent set of developments, there's some other players here as well. Golden State possibly? The Lakers are going to be heard from again at some point on this because they would deal Bynum and that would likely be the best piece Orlando could hope to get back.

Williams is going to Dallas. He looks at the Joe Johnson trade like "Oh man if i don't get out of here right now, I am completely fucked for the foreseeable future."
